FAQ

General

Can I bring my dog on the trail?

Unfortunately, dogs aren’t allowed in the huts where you’ll be staying. This, combined with the intensity of the trail, means you can’t bring your dog along.

How many kilometers will I cover?

Over the course of the week, you’ll walk just under 75 km. Daily stages range from 10 to 19 km, with one longer 22 km day. The itinerary is well paced, balancing the distance covered with the elevation gained. If you’re up for an extra challenge, you can book an additional night at the end of the week and add another 12 km to visit the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

What time do I need to be there on the first day?

On the first day at 9 a.m., the rangers will give you all the practical information you need, along with a briefing about the route. We recommend arriving as early as possible so you can start your first day hike on time and get ahead of the day-trippers on the trail.

You can also choose to arrive the evening before and stay overnight at the small hotel. It’s easy to add this option to your booking. Please note that it won’t be available if the hotel is fully booked.

What’s included in the food pack?

The food pack is ideal if you want to keep costs down while making sure your meals provide all the nutrients you need during an intense hike. It includes tasty, varied and nutritious meals (5 x lunch, 1 x dinner (camping) & 1 x breakfast (camping)).

Your cooking kit is included too, with a cooking pot, gas burner and gas canister. Just bring a lighter and reusable cutlery or a long spoon.

Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are available.

Can you take food allergies or intolerances into account?

For meals provided by local people, we can cater for dietary requirements if you let us know in advance, but for freeze-dried meals (food packs), we recommend that you bring your own food. As all freeze-dried meals are processed in the same facility, cross-contamination with allergens cannot be ruled out.

What kind of footwear is required for the hike?

High-top hiking boots (A/B) are mandatory. Low-cut walking shoes, running shoes, trainers, or other low-cut footwear are not permitted. The terrain is often uneven and challenging, so high-top hiking boots are required to provide adequate ankle support and reduce the risk of injury.

What are the booking conditions?

When making a booking, you can choose how much flexibility you want. Check the different booking conditions, as well as the corresponding payment, modification and cancellation conditions.

Is there on-site support?

This trail is self-guided. That means you have complete freedom to hike the route on your own. The advantage? You can walk with peace of mind because everything is taken care of for you: from accommodations to a beautiful hiking route. Our rangers on-site are on standby to help wherever needed.

On the first day, you'll receive all the briefings, explanations, and materials from our rangers. In the Travelbase app, you can find the route and useful information. After that, you’ll start the hike independently. The rangers are, of course, reachable by phone to assist when needed.

You will also be given access to a chat group with all the other participants departing on the same date just before you set off. You can use this group to chat with each other or with our team.

Communication

How can my family get in touch with me during the trail?

Your family can contact the main Travelbase office line to pass on any urgent messages. Our office staff can then inform the rangers.

Where can I find more information about my trip?

You can find all practical information about Dolomiti Trail step by step in the Travelbase app once you have completed your booking. You will also receive the most important updates by email.

About Dolomiti Trail

How are the hikes organized?

The Dolomiti Trail is a self-guided trail. That means you’ll hike the entire route independently. We make sure you have everything you need to complete the trail successfully. Everything is arranged for you, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. All you need to do is hike and enjoy the experience.

  • Our experienced rangers will give you a detailed briefing on the first day.
  • After that, you’ll set off independently along the manageable, well-balanced route we’ve mapped out for you.
  • Our handy trail app includes an overview of all the routes and important information for each day. In principle, this should allow you to complete the entire route independently.
  • We’ll also arrange your accommodation in huts or campsites along the trail.
  • Of course, our rangers are available to help whenever needed. You can contact them with any questions throughout the trip.
Where are we staying?

We arrange accommodation with plenty of character. You’ll spend a week in the mountains, staying in charming mountain huts, a cozy hotel along the trail, and one night camping at a campsite. We provide the tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat. All locations have sanitary facilities.

  • 1 night in a cozy little hotel (shared room) by the lake, including breakfast and dinner
  • 2 nights in huts along the trail (dormitory), including breakfast (you must use a sleeping bag liner in the huts, which you can also rent from us)
  • 1 night in a tent at a campsite along the trail (tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat included)

At the hotel at the start of the week, you can choose between a bed in a shared room with other participants or a private double room.

In the mountain huts, you’ll sleep in dorms or mattress rooms. These are shared sleeping areas with several bunk beds or mattresses. You’ll be sharing the space with other hikers. It’s a unique and quintessential part of life in a mountain hut, and the best way to experience the mountains up close. Private rooms are not available in the huts.

At the campsite, you’ll stay in your own tent.

You must bring your own sleeping bag liner. We also recommend bringing earplugs and/or a sleep mask to ensure a peaceful night in the hut.

When is the first day of hiking?

For The Dolomiti Trail, the first day of hiking is the start date of your booking. For example, if you book from 1 to 6 September, you’ll head straight out on 1 September for the day hike to Lago di Sorapis.

If you’d rather set off well rested, you can optionally book an extra night in Misurina before the start through us. Please note that availability is limited, and your start date will still show as 1 September in the Travelbase app. You’ll see the extra hotel night before the first day listed among your selected options.

What about food and drinks?

During the hike, you'll regularly pass a hut where you can grab something to eat or drink. Breakfast is always included at the huts where you stay overnight, and dinner is included at one of the two huts.

On the night you stay in a tent at the campsite, you can have dinner at the campsite restaurant or grab something from its food truck. There's also a small shop selling basic breakfast supplies.

On the evening when dinner isn't included at the hut, you can choose your meal from the hut's menu. (Please note: this isn't included, so you'll need to pay for it yourself after dinner.)

We recommend bringing enough food for the day. Pack plenty of snacks, such as nuts and dried fruit, to keep your energy levels up.

If you don't want to eat lunch at a hut every day, or you'd simply like to spend a little less, you can also buy a food pack from us for €50. It includes a cooking set (small pot, gas burner and gas canister) and several freeze-dried meals (daily lunch, plus dinner and breakfast for the night at the campsite). Bring your own lighter and reusable cutlery or a long-handled spoon.

You'll also need to bring your own water bottles. Make sure you can carry at least 2 to 3 litres of water. You can refill your bottles at the huts, sometimes for a fee.

Can I customise the trip to my own liking?

As we offer a fully organised trip, it is not possible to adjust the duration or itinerary. However, you are free to extend your trip independently by spending a few extra days on site afterwards, for example, or continuing your journey to another country.
